More quarter glass break-ins! Yes, our glaziers are continually coming back with pictures of car break-ins.
Strangely we are seeing a trend whereby these windows are being broken, but not even pushed through to open the door.
We are having plenty of customers telling us the window was broken, but nothing inside the vehicle touched or taken.

Keeping Your Car Safe from Burglary

Over the last decade or so we’ve noticed some rather interesting trends in burglary from cars in Auckland.
One of the most common aspect is the vandals use of the quarter glass or “corner” glass in gaining access to vehicles.
This is usually done from the left (passengers) side, and is particularly more prevalent in vehicle break-ins where the vehicle was parked on the roadside.
This is of course, due to the left hand side being the kerb side, and therefore easier for the criminal to stay out of view from passing traffic.
Some of the best rules to observe to prevent a car break-in:
If at all possible, try to keep your car off the road – especially at night
Make sure there are no extra items visable in the vehicle. (This includes Bluetooth car kits, GPS, CD’s even old phones or small coins.)
Any car alarm is great, but remember if you don’t obey the above two rules, chances are the thieves will still have a go.
This car pictured had a full alarm, and no visable goodies in the vehicle. However being parked on the roadside in a central Auckland suburb notorious for break-ins was enough to result in a broken glass.
Windscreen Repairs

Windscreen Repairs for Warrants of Fitness are something most people don’t even consider.
However a WOF issuing agent is within the law to decline a warrant of fitness for any vehicle that has ANY unrepaired windscreen damage.
Most windscreen chips under 50mm anywhere on the windscreen are OK for repair, and some that are much larger can sometimes be repaired.
The chip repair on the left is an example of a chip repair under 50mm (just) that cannot be repaired.
This is because there are actually two separate points of damage. (The inner crater damage, and the outer half-moon ring.)
The crushed area in the crater is greater than 10mm, and thus this windscreen is unrepairable.
Nissan Lucino Windscreens

Nissan Lucino windscreens are VERY popular.
The Lucino is the same model as the Sentra in the same year and they both take the same glass parts.
This Nissan Lucino has had the windscreen completely caved in due to vandalism.

Mercedes Benz CLS500 Windscreen Replace

This Mercedes Benz has just had a replacement windscreen. Our glaziers can replace this type of windscreen reasonably quickly (within 1-2hours).
This type of windscreen has rain sensors attached.
A rain sensor is a small diode that senses moisture from the inside of the windscreen and turn the wipers on automatically, and to the correct speed according on the amount of rain.

Ford Territory rear windscreens! We have done plenty of them. In this model the tailgate glass opens independently of the the gate itself.
With two moving parts (the tailgate & the glass) comes more chance of breakage.
The most common form (aside from vandalism) is people trying to close the glass hard with the tailgate still ajar.
Windscreens Damaged Due to Vandalism

Vandalism to cars (particularly Car Windows) seems to be on the rise.
Lately our glaziers are replacing more and more vehicle glass that has been either broken into (theft), or simply vandalised.

Our 
mobile glaziers see plenty of vandalism damage.
This vehicle was parked on the side of the road and suffered what appears to be “axe” damage to the windscreen.
Our mobile service vans are equipped to deal with every Autoglass situation.
In this case we were able to use our mobile high pressure air blower to remove all the tiny glass fragment that were inside the vehicle.

Corrosion / Rust Under Windscreens

Rust under windscreens is a common problem. The biggest issue is that sometimes we only find rust after we have removed the windscreen.
Corrosion like this whilst seemingly small, is right in the point where the pillar meets the body.
The black strip you can see around the edge further away from the rust is the line that we bond the windscreen to.
Where rust or corrosion is present, this area will not be bonded if a windscreen was fitted now. Read the rest of this entry »
